Passport Renewal Online: Who Qualifies in the US?

US passport renewal online is available to eligible adults who want routine service. Check the eligibility conditions before paying or planning around the published processing time: online renewal is not a shortcut for an international trip that is already close.

The State Department’s online renewal page is the starting point. The guide below separates three decisions that are easy to mix together: whether you qualify, which document you need and how much time to allow.

Passport renewal online: six eligibility checks

You must meet all the published conditions, rather than selecting the ones that suit your situation.

CheckPublished requirement
Passport validityA 10-year passport, expiring within one year or expired less than five years ago
Your ageAt least 25
Personal detailsNo change to information such as name or sex
Travel timingNo travel for at least six weeks after submission; online renewal is routine service
Your locationIn a US state or territory when applying
The existing documentIn your possession, undamaged, and not reported lost or stolen

The old passport will be invalidated after submission. Keep it rather than mailing it in, and do not rely on it for international travel after cancellation. That makes the timing check a practical decision, not just a box on a form.

Here is a calendar illustration: submitting on October 25 and traveling on November 26 leaves 32 days, less than six weeks. Six weeks after October 25 is December 6. Neither calculation predicts an arrival date; it simply checks the gap between the two dates you entered.

What does an online renewal cost?

The State Department’s renewal-eligible fee table lists these application fees:

DocumentRenewal application fee
Passport book$130
Passport card$30
Book and card$160
US renewal application fees: passport book $130, passport card $30, and both $160, excluding optional services.

Confirm that your existing and requested document combination qualifies on the renewal page. The table is a cost comparison, not a statement that every applicant can switch freely between a book and a card online.

Optional 1–3-day return delivery costs $26.87 for an eligible passport-book application. Faster return delivery happens after the passport is mailed; it does not turn routine online review into expedited processing. The fee page says this delivery option is unavailable for a card-only application. Photo services, if you buy them, can add a separate cost.

For a basic book renewal with that optional return service, the two listed fees total $156.87. That arithmetic does not include a photo service or establish eligibility for a particular application.

Processing time is only one part of the wait

The current processing-time page lists routine processing at 4–6 weeks. It describes processing as the time at a passport agency or center and treats postal delivery separately, allowing up to two weeks for the completed document to arrive.

Online submission avoids mailing a paper application to the agency. It does not eliminate the delivery stage at the end. Requests for extra information can also extend the process. Check the published times again when you apply; they can change.

Online renewal planning separates eligibility and submission, routine review of four to six weeks, and postal delivery time afterward.
Original process map. The six-week travel condition is an eligibility rule; four-to-six-week processing excludes delivery. Neither is a guaranteed arrival date.

Keep the eligibility rule and the estimated stages on separate lines in your travel notes. “I am not traveling for six weeks” answers an eligibility question. “Routine review is four to six weeks” describes the published processing estimate. Neither sentence says your passport is guaranteed to be in your hand on the last day of week six.

Prepare an original digital photo

The Department’s digital-photo instructions require a recent color photo, a plain white or off-white background and an original image without appearance-altering filters or retouching. Do not photograph or scan a printed photo to make the upload.

Accepted file types include JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC and HEIF; the stated file-size range is 54 KB to 10 MB. Have the file on the device you will use before starting. The upload tool checks basic requirements, but an employee reviews the submitted photo too. Passing the upload screen is not the same as final acceptance.

Use the official examples to inspect lighting, framing and face visibility. A photo that looks attractive as a portrait may still fail a document requirement. Save the original file so you can select it directly rather than forwarding a compressed screenshot between devices.

Start at the official address, then keep a record

The authorized online application address is opr.travel.state.gov. Applicants must complete their own submission; another website cannot submit the online application on their behalf. Start from the State Department’s renewal page and verify the destination before entering private details.

Keep the confirmation and use the Department’s status guidance after applying. If your travel plans change, use its official support route to discuss the situation. Do not assume buying faster postage resolves an application that needs a different service route.
